Emerging Leader Programme + Q&A with Anita Avgucevica

This month our emerging leaders welcomed GEG Capital CFO, Rory Mackenzie who facilitated the strategy and finance session looking at future growth, financial statements and cash modelling.

The emerging leaders explored how commercial terms impact working capital through a project life cycle. Individuals were challenged to consider how they could influence cash in their current role, and participated in a business simulation where decisions impacted profit.

Aimed at those who are evolving in a leadership role, the 12-month blended learning programme challenges participants to think beyond the confines of their current role and area of responsibility.

Q&A With Emerging Leader, Anita Avgucevica

Tell us about you… what’s your work history to date?

Funnily enough, I studied Chemistry at university because I have always been a very analytical and logical person, and so I thought science was going to be the perfect career route for me. However after finishing my degree I realised that my true passion was working in a role that enabled me to use my people skills. Learning the ins and outs of recruitment has really brought this to light for me – my days at work consist of speaking to candidates, clients and colleagues and no two days are ever the same!

Who or what inspired you to peruse the career you have today?

I grew up in Ireland after my family moved over there when I was 8 years old, leaving my home country Latvia behind. Growing up as an immigrant in a foreign country, I was faced with many challenges. I didn’t speak any English so I had to learn a brand new language and culture whilst trying to keep up with my peers at school. Through this I became very resilient and I pride myself on being able to be flexible and adaptable in my work ethic.

As a result I am very career driven and I plan to one day be in a position where I can inspire others no matter their background or circumstances to always achieve their full potential. Through the ELP I have learned that there is more than one way to be an effective leader – but all effective leaders have one thing in common, they must be able to uplift and develop others to reach their best and this is something I am very much looking forward to being able to put into practice.

Can you provide details of a professional accomplishment in the group that you are proud of?

I am proud of my achievements at Cammach Bryant to date, I will be shortly sitting my REC examination and have been actively pursing opportunities for growth and development including taking part in the Emerging Leader Programme and joining Aberdeen Young Professionals mentor scheme. I am fortunate to be surrounded by professionals within the energy industry and have made a point of actively learning from their expertise!

What inspires you, and do you have any personal goals that you are hoping to achieve?

Outside of work, I am a keen weightlifter always striving to be able to push myself to lift more. I aim to go to the gym at least 4 times a week and I am currently working towards a squat goal of 100kg for 10 reps. Lifting gives me a strong sense of achievement in my life and as I am highly competitive, competing against myself motivates me to achieve more. I also find that exercise is a great way to destress and declutter your mind, helping me keep on top of my mental health as well.

What motivates and energises you at work?

Through my participation on the Emerging Leader Programme – I have learned my MBTI type which is ESTP. As an extrovert I draw my energy from social interactions, be it with internal colleagues or clients and candidates. As I currently work in a people focussed role I draw a lot of energy from my job. In the future I am planning to purse a career within business development, putting my communication skills and social nature to good use!
