Emerging Leader Programme: Get Acquainted with Erin Johnstone, Assistant Quantity Surveyor

Designed for ambitious professionals aspiring to be in a leadership role, our blended learning 12-month Emerging Leader programme encourages participants to think beyond the confines of their current roles and areas of responsibility, broadening their horizons to embrace the mindset of a future leader.

Throughout the duration of the programme, we are delighted to provide you with the opportunity to get to know the individuals who are participating. So, without any further delay, it is our pleasure to introduce Erin Johnstone!

Tell us about you… what’s your work history to date?

Having spent just over a year at my local accountants as an administrator, I seized the opportunity to join Global as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor in the North Fabrication division.

In this role, I have further developed my understanding and applied my skills. My current position provides me with the opportunity to expand my knowledge in various areas, including analytical reporting, delivering results, data monitoring, cost collation, and more.

Who or what inspired you to peruse the career you have today?

During my secondary education, a teacher highlighted the possibility of a career in this field for me, recognising my practical approach and problem-solving skills. I did consider it, but when I left school, I faced a setback after being rejected by another local firm following the interview stage.

Fortunately, at the time of my onboarding, GEG's Commercial Director happened to be my neighbor. They contacted me about an upcoming role within NFab and expressed their belief that I would be a suitable candidate for the job.

I felt completely out of my comfort zone moving into the commercial industry, but channelled those emotions into my drive to succeed and ability to take on any task with an open mind.

Can you provide details of a professional accomplishment in the group that you are proud of?

An example of a professional accomplishment for me is when I received my promotion at the back end of last year. The was due to my line manager recognising my resilience to persevere and find the right answer, always ensuring data integrity.

Although it may not seem like much, the change from Trainee to Assistant and the responsibilities that come along with it has helped me to develop my confidence to take on bigger challenges that I may have originally thought I was incompetent of undertaking.

What inspires you, and do you have any personal goals that you are hoping to achieve?

In the workplace, I am inspired by new challenges and problem solving; I find it exiting! I also take pleasure in executing procedural tasks I'm familiar with because they provide a sense of security, knowing that I can complete them efficiently, aligning with the company's track record of delivering reports and results punctually.

What motivates and energises you at work?

Every day when I come to work, I feel motivated and energised by the people around me - I can't think of a single person in my office with whom I haven't shared a good laugh.

The fact that I can approach anyone for help or with a query without any hesitation creates a comfortable and supportive work environment.
